Travel writer or travel blogger?

Travel writing on the ground

Many travel writers have a dilemma. Should we be writing travel blog posts, or should we write travel articles for newspapers and magazines? One the one hand we want to be out there growing our following on social media. On the other, we want to get our work published in legacy media - which still has a huge followings and elevated status. Here’s the good news: you can do both. Indeed, you should do both. Remember that a blog is fundamentally a diary. So your blog posts are there to tell your following what you’ve been doing during a particular day on your travel adventures. But when you are writing for a newspaper or magazine, essentially you are telling a story about your travels. Writing a diary entry and telling a story are different things. And they are not mutually exclusive. So when I’m on a trip I will write blog posts as I go, all about my experiences on the day. Meanwhile I’m thinking about material for longer narrative features which will be published in the newspapers and magazines who have commissioned me. There might be some overlap between the two, but essentially they are different animals and writing both won’t cause you any problems with editors or readers. So … do both!
